The City of Chattanooga Land Development Office and City of Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Agency are undertaking a comprehensive effort to update the Sign Ordinance. The City’s sign regulations have not been completely updated since 1986 so it is time to bring the code up to current sign industry standards that are in compliance with federal and state regulations.

What are the New Sign Ordinance Goals?
The goals for the new ordinance are to incorporate new best practices in the sign industry, updates for compliance with federal and state court decisions involving signage, new and updated sign definitions, incorporate more charts and images to make it a more user-friendly document to help better explain the regulations, an updated list of prohibited and exempt signs, as well as new types of permitted signs, and more. Also, to encourage creative and well-designed signs that contribute in a positive way to the City’s visual environment, express local character, and help develop a distinctive image in the city.
Public Input Opportunities
City staff conducted a survey to get public input about the current ordinance and suggestions on how to improve it. The survey time period has ended.
